Something Funny

  1. In the first clip, there's a moment of joy and of laughter almost - a human connection. The gunman's face conveys a moment of transcendence: wait, what am I doing? Why do I have a gun in my hand and why am I going to kill this man I have bonded with through singing a song? For a moment, the viewer experiences hope - that maybe all will be forgiven - and then the cynical side of me thought how that would be cliche, cheezy, etc. But when film cuts to the long shot (the distance pulls us back, a symbolic dehumanizing distancing from the extreme close up that was so intimate) and the gunman pulls the trigger. We are shocked and I was saddened - that moment of connection was not enough to create forgiveness. There is no redemption only violent death. The long shot spares us from the graphic violence, yet we still see blood and brains splattering. When do we stop laughing? When does our hope begin? Why must the man die?

The second clip I cannot watch - after less than sixty seconds of painful fails, I physically cringe and imagine what that feels like. All the Jackass movies and stunts - can't do it. Not my sense of humor. If it's your cup of tea, why is it funny to you? What makes it funny?
